Earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed the first wave of titles that would be joining its Xbox Game Pass subscription service this July. As well as Palworld 1.0, Gears Of War: Reloaded and Winds Of Arcana: Ruination, it was announced that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 would finally be joining Xbox Game Pass after it originally launched back in 2020.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 was a day one launch title for Xbox Game Pass, but 1+2 was released before Microsoft acquired publishers Activision in a $68billion deal

However, in an update to the original blog post about July’s Xbox Game Pass titles, Microsoft wrote: “We’ve removed Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 from the list of titles coming soon to Game Pass.” No reason has been given for the sudden u-turn, but fans have speculated it could be related to music licensing or an existing deal between Activision and Sony.

Ahead of the launch of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, Tony Hawk said he had “aspirations” to remaster and re-release fan-favourite Underground. “It’s not up to me generally. I’ll campaign all I can, but I’m working with a much bigger company that’s a lot smarter than me,” he added. However, a number of Iron Galaxy game developers were laid off shortly before Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 was released, including the game’s lead developer, reducing the odds of future Tony Hawk games.

More recently, Xbox has confirmed a wave of redundancies across its studios, with more than 3,200 people set to lose their jobs.

“Our business today is not healthy,” explained Xbox boss Asha Sharma. “We are operating at margins that are 3–10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. We entered Gen 9 with a smaller install base and a higher cost structure. To grow, we bet on Game Pass, multi-platform, and a broader portfolio of content. While those businesses have created meaningful value, they did not grow at the pace we expected. As that happened, our core business weakened, and we added more teams, more investment, and more time, hoping for a better outcome. And now the industry is facing the most severe hardware crisis in its history. We must reset Xbox.”

In other news Swen Vincke, the founder and CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 game studio Larian, has responded to My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way talking about the franchise onstage at Wembley.
