What aspects of the character Hwang Choong-sik did you find most compelling? 황충식 캐릭터의 어떤 면이 가장 매력적이라고 느끼셨나요?
Hwang Choong-sik might look rough and gruff on the outside, but underneath, he’s a warm-hearted man who loves his family more than anyone — and that’s what drew me to him. With his daughter, he’s endlessly tender, a real softie of a dad, and as a detective, he throws himself in body and all, so there’s this real sense of responsibility to him too. He has so many different sides. Even as he swings between comedy and action, you feel a genuine, human warmth running underneath it all, and that made me grow all the fonder of him.
황충식은 겉으로는 거칠고 투박해 보이지만, 누구보다 가족을 사랑하는 따뜻한 인물이라 매력적으로 다가왔습니다. 딸 앞에서는 한없이 다정한 아빠의 모습을 보여주고, 형사로서는 몸을 아끼지 않고 뛰어드는 책임감 있는 모습까지 정말 다양한 매력을 가진 캐릭터라고 생각했습니다. 코미디와 액션을 오가면서도 그 안에 인간적인 진심과 따뜻함이 느껴지는 인물이라 저도 더욱 애정이 갔습니다.
You’ve played a wide range of characters throughout your career. How did this role challenge you in ways that were different from your previous projects? 배우님께서는 커리어 전 에 걸쳐 다양한 캐릭터를 연기해 오셨습니다. 이번 역할은 이전 작품들과 비교했을 때 어떤 점에서 새로운 도전이었나요?
The premise alone felt genuinely new to me — an ex-husband and a current husband moving together to save their family. Choong-sik is a hot-tempered detective, but he carries so much for his ex-wife and daughter, so the important thing was not to lose that sincerity toward family even in the middle of the action and comedy. And on the comedy side, I thought a lot about how the character’s clumsy, unpolished edges could turn into laughs naturally, straight out of the situation. Those were the things that made this a new challenge.
이번 작품은 전 남편과 현 남편이 함께 가족을 구하기 위해 움직인다는 설정 자체가 굉장히 새롭게 느껴졌습니다. 황충식은 다혈질 형사이지만, 전 부인과 딸을 향한 마음이 큰 인물이라 액션과 코미디 안에서도 가족을 향한 진심을 놓치지 않는 것이 중요했습니다. 또 코미디적인 부분에서는 인물이 가진 어설프고 부족한 모습들이 상황 속에서 자연스럽게 웃음으로 이어질 수 있도록 고민했습니다. 이런 부분들이 하나의 새로운 도전이 아닐까 싶습니다.
Husbands in Action blends action, comedy, and emotional family drama. How did you approach finding the right balance between those different tones? 영화 〈남편들〉은 액션, 코미디, 그리고 감성적인 가족 드라마가 어우러진 작품입니다. 서로 다른 분위기 사이에서 적절한 균형을 잡기 위해 어떤 방식으로 접근하셨나요?
I thought the biggest draw of this film was the setup itself — two people who should never meet or cross paths, tangled together whether they like it or not. The friction between their different personalities and jobs is what makes the action and comedy come so naturally. But even so, the thing that lets these two carry the story all the way through is, in the end, love for family. So when I was acting, rather than leaning only on the comedy or the action, I tried to keep the characters centered on that sincerity toward family and never let it slip. Because that feeling was there underneath, I think the different tones could blend together naturally.
만나거나 마주치지 않아야 하는 두 캐릭터가 어쩔 수 없이 엮이게 되는 설정 자체가 이 작품의 가장 큰 매력이라고 생각했습니다. 서로 다른 성격과 직업에서 오는 충돌이 액션과 코미디를 자연스럽게 만들어 주는 요소였고요. 하지만 그 안에서도 두 사람이 끝까지 이야기를 이끌어 갈 수 있는 힘은 결국 가족에 대한 사랑이라고 생각했습니다. 그래서 연기할 때도 코미디나 액션만 강조하기보다, 인물들이 가족을 향한 진심을 잃지 않도록 중심을 잡으려고 했습니다. 그 감정이 있었기에 서로 다른 분위기들도 자연스럽게 어우러질 수 있었다고 생각합니다.

Was there a particular scene that was especially difficult to perform because it required you to balance comedy and action at the same time? 코미디와 액션을 동시에 균형 있게 표현해야 해서 특히 연기하기 어려웠던 장면이 있었나요?
The action wasn’t easy, but I think landing the comedy naturally was the harder part. Rather than forcing the laughs, I tried to stay locked into the situation alongside Gong Myoung. The toughest was the cold-storage warehouse scene — trapped inside, tearing a bag open with our toes. That one really needed us to trust each other, and because Myoung and I had to put our faith in one another and move as one, it stays with me all the more.
액션도 쉽지 않았지만, 코미디를 자연스럽게 살리는 게 더 어려웠던 것 같아요. 억지로 웃기기보다는 공명 배우와 함께 상황에 집중하려고 했습니다. 가장 어려웠던 건 냉동창고 장면이었어요. 안에 갇힌 채 발가락으로 봉지를 뜯는 장면이었는데, 서로에 대한 신뢰가 정말 필요했죠. 명이와 서로를 믿고 한 호흡으로 움직여야 했던 장면이라 더 기억에 남습니다.

What was it like working alongside Gong Myoung, and did you discover anything surprising about each other during filming? 공명 배우와 함께 작업한 소감은 어떠셨나요? 촬영 중 서로에 대해 새롭게 알게 되거나 의외라고 느낀 점이 있었나요?
It’s been a long time since Gong Myoung and I worked together on Extreme Job. In that stretch, I felt we’d both grown a good deal and gotten deeper as actors. The time we spent talking things through and pushing ourselves to make a good film and good scenes was a real pleasure. As an actor, I was grateful to share the screen with him again. And maybe because Myoung and I keep in touch often, there wasn’t really anything new or unexpected I discovered about him on set. He was just the same as ever.
공명 배우와 〈극한직업〉에서 함께한 뒤로 시간이 참 많이 흘렀어요. 그 사이 서로 많이 성장했고, 연기적으로도 더 깊어졌다는 생각이 들었습니다. 좋은 작품, 좋은 장면을 만들기 위해 함께 이야기하고 도전했던 시간이 참 즐거웠어요. 배우로서 다시 호흡을 맞출 수 있어 감사했습니다. 그리고 명이와는 워낙 자주 연락하고 지내서인지, 촬영 중에 새롭게 알게 되거나 의외라고 느낀 점은 딱히 없었던 것 같아요. 늘 그대로였습니다.

Do you have a favorite behind-the-scenes memory or funny story from the set that audiences wouldn’t know about? 관객들이 잘 알지 못하는 촬영 현장의 기억에 남는 비하인드나 재미있는 에피소드가 있을까요?
The blood-transfusion scene with Kim Ji-seok really stays with me. The scene itself had to play out seriously, but the situation was so funny that we laughed our way through the shoot. There was also this easy atmosphere among the actors — everyone rolling with each other, adjusting on the fly — and I think that cheerful energy found its way into the scene on its own.
김지석 배우와 함께한 수혈 장면이 참 기억에 남아요. 장면 자체는 진지하게 흘러가야 하는데, 상황이 워낙 웃겨서 촬영 내내 정말 많이 웃었습니다. 또 배우들끼리 서로 편하게 받아주고 그때그때 맞춰주는 분위기가 있어서, 그 유쾌한 에너지가 장면 안에도 자연스럽게 스며든 것 같아요.
The film features a strong ensemble cast. Were there any moments on set where the cast’s chemistry unexpectedly shaped a scene? 영화에는 탄탄한 배우진이 함께합니다. 촬영 현장에서 배우들의 케미스트리가 예상치 못한 방식으로 장면에 영향을 준 순간이 있었나요?
More than any single moment, there was an atmosphere where every actor took full ownership of their own role while still looking out for their scene partners, helping each other come off better. Gong Myoung and I go back a ways, so the give-and-take came naturally. I was meeting some of the others for the first time, but they’re such genuinely good people that the chemistry built itself. I think all of that came alive naturally in the film too.
어떤 한순간이라기보다는, 모든 배우가 각자 자기 역할을 책임감 있게 해내면서도 상대 배우가 더 잘 살 수 있도록 배려하는 분위기가 있었어요. 공명 배우와는 오래전부터 호흡을 맞춰온 사이라 자연스럽게 주고받을 수 있었고요. 다른 배우분들은 처음 만났지만 인간적으로 정말 좋은 분들이라 케미가 절로 만들어졌습니다. 그런 것들이 영화 안에서도 자연스럽게 살아난 것 같아요.
How did your family react to the film? 영화를 본 가족들의 반응은 어땠나요?
My wife came to the premiere and watched it at the theater. She told me she had a great time with it — though while she was watching the action scenes, she said she felt pretty bad for me.
아내가 〈남편들〉 시사회 때 극장에 와서 봤어요. 너무 재미있게 봤다고 하더라고요. 다만 액션 장면을 볼 때는 많이 안쓰러웠다고 했습니다.

It makes me so happy that I can connect with audiences far away through a film. Our surroundings and cultures may differ, but the love you have for your family, the wish to protect someone — I think those are much the same for all of us. I hope those feelings come through for viewers in all sorts of countries.

In the end, I think this film’s greatest strength is love for family. Even inside that slightly unusual relationship — an ex-husband and a current husband — they wind up moving together on the strength of one shared wish: to protect their family. After watching, I hope audiences remember these lovable husbands who fight for their families, and the warmth of different people pooling their strength under the name of family.
