The digital hardcore duo are on this week’s (July 13) edition of The Cover, a manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read Femtanyl’s profile here, written by Alex Rigotti and featuring photography by Jacqui Sharah.

Alongside their Cover story, Femtanyl have curated a playlist, titled ‘Femta-nil’. The pair’s approach to putting their selections together was to choose “calmer, nicer songs that contrast the kind of music we tend to make but [are] actually stuff that we listen to all the time to calm down or decompress”. Among their choices are tracks by James K, Grouper, Sigur Rós, Nourished By Time and more. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.

Noelle Mansbridge started Femtanyl in her bedroom, the project starting as an outlet while she was “very upset and manic”. After meeting Juno Callender, with whom she bonded over gonzo horror films, left-field animation websites, and shared tastes in music, she invited her new friend to join her.

Femtanyl’s friendship proved instrumental to the creation of their debut album, ‘Man Bites Dog’, which was released in February. The record flips a transgender coming-of-age story on its head, with Mansbridge imagining a life where she never transitioned and became a “terrible guy who sucks” instead. “People are viewing it through the lens of how these lyrics correlate to being trans, when in fact, it’s the opposite,” she explains. “A lot of it is written from this very indignant, self-righteous, self-destructive point of view – you’re seeing all the negative space around somebody who should be there.”
