Created by Christopher Storer, the acclaimed FX kitchen drama stars Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richard “Richie” Jerimovich and Abby Elliott as Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto.

The final season picks up after Carmy’s decision to step away from the restaurant industry, leaving Sydney, Richie and Natalie to carry The Bear forward without him at the centre of the kitchen.

With money running out, a possible sale looming and a torrential storm hitting Chicago, the team are forced to pull together for one last service as they try to keep the restaurant alive and chase the recognition they have been working towards.

In the US, season five premiered on FX and Hulu on June 25. In the UK, the season is available to stream on Disney+.

In a four-star review of season five, NME wrote: “The exact fate of The Bear will be discovered by viewers when the final episode arrives, but the fifth and final season is a suitable send-off to these unlikely comrades. It might not reach the boiling temperatures of the show at its peak, but it’s a satisfying final course.”

The ending of The Bear season five explained

At the end of The Bear season five, the restaurant survives – and finally earns two Michelin stars.

The finale, titled ‘The Original Beef Of Chicagoland’, reveals that Carmy, Sydney, Richie and the rest of the team have pulled off what they had been chasing for years, with the restaurant receiving the major recognition that had hung over the final season.

Carmy also sticks to his decision to leave the kitchen. After spending the season helping the team through one final brutal stretch, he steps back from the restaurant and begins looking for a new path, interviewing for an internship at an architecture firm.

Sydney stays at The Bear and becomes head chef, while Natalie remains involved as part-owner alongside Sydney and Richie. Tina becomes Sydney’s chef de cuisine, and Marcus takes charge of desserts after Luca returns to Copenhagen.

Richie, meanwhile, prepares to travel to Japan for a hospitality seminar, overcoming his fear of flying. Jess joins him on the plane, suggesting their relationship is moving forward too.

The Beef also lives on, with Uncle Jimmy, Ebraheim and the Faks helping to expand the sandwich side of the business into suburban ghost kitchens.

In Carmy’s final scene, he texts his late brother Mikey the words “All good”, suggesting that he has finally found some peace after years of grief, pressure and self-destruction.

The series ends with Richie’s daughter Eva being given a birthday party at The Bear, bringing the restaurant family together one final time.
