The mysterious OD was first announced at The Game Awards 2023 via a short teaser trailer. Last year, Kojima said the horror anthology that will be created by the “avengers” of the directing world with Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ Sophia Lillis and Madonna collaborator Udo Kier starring as the three main characters.

As well as Peele, it’s rumoured that The Haunting Of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan, Midsommar’s Ari Aster, Alan Wake’s Sam Lake and Guillermo Del Toro could be involved in OD.

Speaking about the project to Entertainment Weekly, Kojima said he came up with the OD concept while he was working on Death Stranding by himself.  “I wanted to do something new. I wanted to do something different. I can’t reveal much detail, but it’s something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system.”

OD is being developed in close collaboration with Xbox, who were the only studio who wanted to be involved with the game. “I pitched to many people, to the big companies, and also to the up-and-coming companies. All of them said the same thing. They said that I’m crazy, and that they really don’t understand the concept [and] that they will not be able to do it.”

“I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached,” Kojima continued. “It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can’t say much more, because it’ll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!”

OD doesn’t currently have a release date but Kojima is also working on “action espionage” title Physint, which won’t launch until 2030

In other news, Netflix has announced a new interactive horror game experience, starring Sadie Sink, Zoë Kravitz and Troy Baker.
