‘Ponies’ fans are angry after show’s cancellation: “Massive fumble”

Fans of the show Ponies are taking their frustration to social media, following the show’s cancellation after just one season.

Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson starred in the Cold War-set show, as two secretaries working at the US embassy in Moscow who are thrust into espionage following the death of their husbands. The show debuted in January on US streaming service Peacock, and in May in the UK on Sky, but has been cancelled after one season. Fans of the series took to X (formerly Twitter) to air their frustration.

“Series was legit solid,” said one viewer. “At least worth a 3 season run. Massive fumble, dude.” Another added: “Think this is a mistake. Ponies has been a bit of a slow burner with folk just discovering it more recently and bingeing, could have been a real hit if given the time. Shame!”

One fan criticised Peacock for the move. “The show was really good, legitimately good – well written, well acted, looks great” they said. “It’s clearly been sold everywhere as it was in the top ten on other platforms (uk, Australia etc) so made its money, I feel like Peacock are only interested in viral buzz and not their audiences.”

Many streaming services have axed shows early into their run, such as recent Netflix mystery The Boroughs. Reflecting on the trend, one fan quipped: “’Canceled after one season’ is starting to feel like a genre at this point.” Another added: “This is why people hate the current streaming era.”

WTF?! This was genuinely a good and funny show and I thought it was a hit first season. This is why people hate the current streaming era.

While promoting the show earlier in the year, Emilia Clarke remarked that she’s unlikely to make a fantasy show again after Game Of Thrones. Speaking to The New York Times, the actor said: “You’re highly unlikely to see me get on a dragon, or even in the same frame as a dragon, ever again.”
