PlayStation Plus is Sony’s version of Xbox Game Pass and gives subscribers access to a changing library of games alongside a variety of online features.
An Essential membership lets subscribers access a select number of games that change every few weeks, Extra lets players choose from a library of “hundreds of games from genre-defining blockbusters to innovative indies” and Premium features iconic classic titles as well as game trials. PlayStation owners also need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play a majority of online games.
Last week, Sony announced that it was set to raise the price of its PlayStation Plus Essential service for new subscribers but it turns out, all three tiers have been affected.
From today (May 26) Essential will now cost you £7.99 instead of £6.99, Extra is up to £11.99 a month from £10.99 and new Premium subscribers will be paying £14.99 a month instead of £13.49. The increased cost of PlayStation Plus has been blamed on “ongoing market conditions”.

Some players have cancelled their subscription following the news. “PS Plus is actually not worth the price anymore. Sony really said ‘pay more for the same backlog and monthly disappointment’. Cancelled mine today. I’ve done my part in this boss fight against the price hike,” wrote one Reddit user. “I canceled yesterday. I’ll be playing singer player games and free to play games until they get their shit together,” said another. “Enough is enough,” added a third, alongside a screenshot of their cancellation confirmation.
Last year, Microsoft confirmed a major price hike for Xbox Game Pass but backtracked last month after backlash from players.
