Indie adventure puzzle game Spirit Of The North 2 launched last year. The sequel to 2019’s beloved Spirit Of The North followed a fox and a raven through an ancient world as they tried to restore lost guardians and make their way home.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Spirit Of The North 2, a new update is set to go live next week that ties into the game’s incredible soundtrack with 10 new tracks available via a new quest.

The full soundtrack to Spirit Of The North 2 will also be available to stream next Wednesday (May 20). Composed by Pav Gekko and taking heavy inspiration from Icelandic artists Ólafur Arnalds, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Sigur Rós, the digital soundtrack will include 93 tracks including the ten previously unheard songs. You can pre-save the album here.

NME readers can also check out an exclusive live performance of fan-favourite track ‘The Song Of Misthaven’ below:

‘The Song Of Misthaven’ uses an ancient Scandinavian vocal technique known as Kulning, which was once used to call animals across vast landscapes and features throughout the Spirit Of The North 2 soundtrack. “I was interested in creating music that feels as though it breathes with the environment and reflects the vastness, solitude, and mystery of the Icelandic-inspired landscapes. I didn’t want the soundtrack to feel like a traditional cinematic orchestral score, but instead have its own distinct sonic identity,” explained Gekko.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the atmospheric use of ambience, fragile textures, and emotionally expressive vocal work found in contemporary Icelandic music. You can hear those influences throughout the soundtrack in the felt piano, dulcimers, soft string textures and slowly shifting harmonic layers. The more ethereal and expansive moments were especially influenced by Sigur Rós.”

In other news, Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson has hit out at the use of “soulless” AI in video games and isn’t a fan of titles that take hundreds of hours to complete.
