A new Dead Space game will probably never happen because there’s just not enough demand, says former writer and producer Chuck Beaver.

Survival horror game Dead Space was released in 2008 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Sales started slow but it went on to sell over a million copies and two sequels alongside a handful of spin-offs followed. A fourth Dead Space was planned but the project fell apart following the closure of game developers Visceral Games in 2017.

In 2023, ten years after Dead Space 3, EA released a full remake of the original Dead Space with many fans hoping a new game would follow. “Dead Space 4 that would make a lot of sense [following the remake],” said composer Trevor Gureckis.

However after years of silence Chuck Beaver, who wrote and produced Dead Space and the 2011 sequel, has said a new game is unlikely to happen.

The “numbers just aren’t there,” he said on the FVRV podcast (via IGN), explaining that a new game would need to sell more than 10million copies to make a profit. “Any of the Resident Evil [games] are selling around seven million [copies], that’s a pretty good number,” Beaver continued. “But companies now are looking for the next Fortnite. They need something that is a perennial moneymaker. A single-player package game with no live-service offering is just a dinosaur fossil of a business model.”

“It wasn’t like it didn’t get a run out of it [but] it’s disappointing that we can’t take a beloved franchise to its logical end.”

Last year co-creator Glen Schofield told IGN that he was “ready to go” with Dead Space 4 but publishers EA weren’t “interested”. However, following the sale of EA, Schofield started “making calls” to try and get the game made. “I think there’s an opportunity”.

In other news, Wanderstop’s brilliant soundtrack is coming to vinyl for the first time.
