In the final episode, Nicky, reeling from the revelation that his parents’ marriage wasn’t as perfect as he first believed, decides against marrying Rachel at the altar. He believes he is saving both of them from destroying their happiness through marriage, something Rachel didn’t initially want when they first met.

This sparks panic with Rachel, who had convinced herself Nicky was her soulmate in order to break the curse – or to stop it spreading to Nicky’s bloodline at least. The pair head off to a private room away from the chaos.

During a heated argument, Nicky admits to Rachel that he had never believed her about the curse to begin with. This is the dealbreaker for Rachel, who believed she had found someone who understood her and believed her unquestionably.

Nicky tries to patch things up, but Rachel refuses to marry him following this revelation, saying how he’s not worth dying for.

When the sun goes down, and the deadline passes for Rachel to stop the curse shifting to his bloodline, there is an unexpected wrinkle as Nicky’s family members who are already married – but not to their soulmate – start bleeding from their eyes and nose, just like Rachel’s mother years prior before she ultimately died.

The chaos accelerates as Nicky’s mother Victoria, his sister Portia (who married someone in Las Vegas) along with many others in the bloodline at the wedding ceremony, collapse and die on the floor. Aside from Nicky, the only one who isn’t affected is Jules, who has seemingly married his soulmate in Nell.

Nicky and Rachel try to seal their marriage in an attempt to reverse the curse. However, it doesn’t work. Rachel, who has fallen out of love with Nicky, starts bleeding from her face and she runs to an outside enclosure and collapses in the snow.

As the curse passed to another bloodline, The Witness, who was cursed to attend every wedding in Rachel’s family bloodline, was taken by death.

The Witness baton is then passed to Rachel, who reawakens as the immortal being in the snow. She warns young Jude that he must choose to marry the right person in the future, stating that she’ll be there to witness it.

In the final shot, we see Rachel drive off in a pick-up truck scribbled with ‘Just Married’ on the back, as ‘We Will Not Be Lovers’ by The Waterboys blasts over the speakers.
