Anya Taylor-Joy has said that her Peaky Blinders role is the “worst character” she has ever played.
The star appeared in the final two series of the BBC show as villain Gina Gray, who pushes husband Michael Gray (Finn Cole) to try and take control of the Shelby company, and later conspires to kill Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy).
Touching upon the show in a recent interview on Late Night With Seth Myers, Taylor-Joy – who grew up in Argentina – spoke about which of her characters her family gravitates towards.
“Peaky Blinders is huge in Argentina,” she explained. “That’s potentially the worst character I’ve ever played. My family loves it. Loves it.”
Since first debuting in Peaky Blinders, Taylor-Joy has gone on to star in a number of big projects, including a breakout in Netflix‘s The Queen’s Gambit, Emma, Last Night In Soho, The Menu and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
She will next be seen reprising her role as Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and recently went viral for a bizarre interview in which she was asked to compare the character to her rumoured biopic role of Joni Mitchell.
“You’re rumoured to be playing Joni Mitchell, speaking of through lines,” host Craig Melvin asked on The Today Show. “One of the, arguably, most singularly important women in music over the last generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in gaming history. What’s the connection there?”
After pausing for a moment, Taylor-Joy responded: “They’re both singular; you can’t touch them. They’re in a league of their own.”
This year, the actress will also be seen in Dune: Part Three as Alia Atreides after her cameo as the character in the second film.
The trailer for the anticipated film, due out in December, debuted last week, showing the returns of Taylor-Joy alongside Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani, while there were also looks at new cast additions such as Robert Pattinson as Scytale. The clip has led some fans to already declare it as the best film of 2026.
Meanwhile, Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man was released on Netflix last week following a limited cinema release.
In NME‘s three-star review, we said: “Perhaps it’s not as emotional as you might hope but this sombre final chapter of Peaky Blinders still wraps things up as tightly as a burial shroud. And for that, we doff our razor-lined caps.”
