Ghosts is to return with a feature film, The Possession Of Button House, which is about to enter production.
Writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – known to fans as The Six Idiots – have all returned to pen the script. All of them will also star, alongside Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.
“We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series,” the creators and writers said. “We never planned to come back. But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure. We can’t wait to be together and to welcome some brilliant new faces, to tell this soul-stirring tale of life and death.”
Masterminded by the team behind the live-action series of Horrible Histories, Ghosts aired for five series on BBC One between 2019 and 2023. Its fifth and final outing was the most watched comedy series of 2023 and the show also has had spin-offs in various other territories including the US.
Filming is set to begin next month at West Horsley Place in Surrey and on location in the surrounding area.
NME named it the 11th best show of 2023, writing: “Kicking off in 2019, the series maintained its peak season upon season – and this year’s finale was no exception. Not only did it deliver the same tongue-in-cheek humour as was expected after four seasons, but the final chapter also saw writers unveil new sides to the series even as the characters said goodbye.
“From seeing the Captain (Ben Willbond) finally share his story of forbidden love, to the plot twist that none of the remaining ghosts would move into the next stage of the afterlife (or, as Mary (Katy Wix) would prefer, “get sucked off”), the last season wasn’t a traditional ending, but it definitely left us wanting more.”
