Marty Supreme actor Chalamet recently took part in a University of Texas event, in conversation with McConaughey and produced by Variety and CNN, when the pair discussed their time on the movie’s set.

“I gotta say, my last day on Interstellar, I was sad to be leaving,” Chalamet said. “In my trailer, I went to the bathroom and there was a huge turd in my toilet. I felt so disrespected. Like, ‘I know I’m not the star of this movie, but who’s coming in here?’

“So I went around to all the grips, these big guys, and I said, ‘Hey, one of you let it loose in my trailer.’ They said no. I went up to [director Christopher] Nolan, and he pointed to Matthew, and Matthew had this devilish grin on his face. I said, ‘Why’d you do that?’ You said, ‘In Texas, it’s a coming of age, baby.’

McConaughey simply replied, “Souvenir”.

Chalamet described the sci-fi epic Interstellar as “my favourite project I’ve ever been in” and McConaughey’s “most fantastic role”. It was his second movie role, following a turn in the comedy-drama Men, Women & Children, and he told McConaughey that “seeing how you carried yourself on set” gave him a “license” to take himself and his acting career seriously.

“You were pretty easy to be warm to,” McConaughey replied. “I remember you had what I felt like was a feverish curiosity at that time. You were figuring some stuff out, but it seemed obvious to me that no matter what you were dealing with, you were going to make your way.”

Since Interstellar, Chalamet has established himself as one of the premier leading men of his generation with starring roles in films including the Dune movies, Wonka, A Complete Unknown and Marty Supreme.

So far, he has won an Actor Award, a Golden Globe Award and two Critics’ Choice Awards, while he’s also been nominated for four Oscars, six BAFTAs and a Grammy. Two of his Oscar nominations came this year, and he is the youngest actor to earn three Best Actor nominations since Marlon Brando.

For his work as an actor and co-producer on Marty Supreme, he’s up for both Best Actor and Best Picture.

NME gave the table tennis comedy-drama a glowing five-star review, writing: “This is a story about living a great life, however you may define that. It is a film about living fully and without fear, a cynicism-free zone where, for all their fast-talking, people love each other so much it makes your heart feel like it’s about to burst. Talk about a smash.”

This year, he’s reprising his role as Paul Atreides in the final instalment of the Dune trilogy, while he’s also reportedly set to appear in High-Side, a motocross heist film.

McConaughey, meanwhile, last appeared as the titular character in the crime thriller The Rivals Of Amziah King, marking his first screen appearance in six years, and as bus driver Kevin McKay in the survival drama The Lost Bus.
