Daniel Vávra co-founded Warhorse Studios in 2011 to create mediaeval role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. After crowdfunding more than $2million, the game was eventually released in 2018 and went on to sell more than 10million copies.
A sequel was released last year and has already sold more than 5million copies, with both games joining Xbox Game Pass this month. Due to the success of the franchise, fans had been expecting a third Kingdom Come: Deliverance game but now the future of the series is uncertain following the news that Daniel Vávra is stepping away from Warhorse Studios.
“Dan has a new role, that’s the creation of the Kingdom Come movie,” studio boss Martin Frývaldský told CzechCrunch in a statement. “I’m sure people will wonder if this is some kind of breakup with Warhorse. No, on the contrary, Dan himself wanted to move on. He made three games that were a global success, and he has been wanting to try something different for a long time.”

“We have been moving the Kingdom Come brand away from video games for some time now with comics, concerts and tourism, but a film attracts us the most,” he added, with a draft script already written. “Anyone who has played Kingdom Come or Mafia will know Dan’s handwriting and can expect a strong story again,” Frývaldský continued. “We would have to be blind if we didn’t realise how much our brand has grown. We see the film as a compliment to our game creation, which can be extremely successful in its own right.”
Back in 2020, Variety reported that Warhorse were working on a live-action adaptation of Kingdom Come: Deliverance “but then Covid came and everything fell asleep,” Frývaldský explained. “Now, after the release of the second game, we have returned to the idea with much greater drive.”
Set in 1403, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is based on historic events and follows blacksmith’s son Henry on a mission of revenge against the invading King Sigismund Of Hungary following the murder of his parents. Warhorse are currently working on two scripts for the movie – one that retells Henry’s adventure and another featuring a “complimentary” tale.
