Created and published by indie game developers Edmund McMillen (The Binding Of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh), Mewgenics is a roguelike tactical strategy game about cats. “What if you could breed the perfect army of whiskered warriors, then send them on tactical adventures in search of food, money and loads of treasure,” asks the game’s description.
“With more than 1000 unique abilities, 900+ items, and countless environmental interactions, every run throws fresh tactical puzzles at you. There’s real depth here, and endless room for experimenters and optimisers alike,” it continues.
Mewgenics launched yesterday on Steam for PC users and within twelve hours, had sold more than 250,000 copies and recouped its entire budget despite a 12 year development cycle. “So far, this is beating expectations by quite a lot,” Glail told IGN.

Mewgenics currently has an “overwhelmingly positive” review score on Steam with users praising the intricate gameplay loops, the humour and the game’s excellent soundtrack by Ridiculon. The game had a concurrent player peak of 65,962 with more than 44,000 gamers currently playing Mewgenics (via SteamDB).
McMillen has claimed “it will take an average player about 200+ hours to ‘beat the game’ and 500+ hours to 100 per cent it”.
There are over 200 variations to the intro for Mewgenics. Edmund McMillen, inspired by The Simpsons, said he wanted a different outcome every time.

“Mewgenics has exploded. Hundreds of thousands of copies sold in hours. Devs should take note, and try and learn from this wild success story. If there’s anything to learn, it’s this: make fun, unique games. That’s it,” wrote one fan on X. “Got an early copy of Mewgenics and it’s one of the most fun rouguelites I’ve ever played. I haven’t left my couch in days but it’s okay since I don’t sweat and already had my meal for the month,” added another.
In other news, the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout (Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten) have explained why they haven’t played the hit video game series.
