Aaron Moten stars as Maximus, Ella Purnell plays Vault dweller Lucy while Walton Goggins is bad-ass bounty hunter The Ghoul in the live-action adaptation of Fallout.
The series is heavily inspired by the long-running video game franchise but isn’t a direct adaptation of any of the storylines, instead telling a new tale in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
As part of GameInformer’s extensive oral history of the Fallout series, Moten revealed that he’s still never played the games. “I am a gamer; I really enjoy taking a break from watching TV and movies. It’s work for me, and I really have a hard time turning that brain off when becoming a viewer,” he explained. “I have not played Fallout, but I have watched Twitch streams. I’ve watched others play it. But, partly, I forbid myself from playing it at this point. It’s our job to bring a sense of humanity to these three characters.”
However, he did try out several of the classic games as part of a new ‘Best Buddies’ advert
It echoes comments made by Goggins at the end of last year where he revealed he had “no interest” in playing the Fallout games. ”I felt like the way that I can contribute to this story the most was to be kind of an outside observer and a person that can keep them honest about the story, that isn’t influenced by adhering to the myth of the game.”
Meanwhile Purnell told GameInformer that she tried to play the Fallout games but wasn’t very good at them. “There’s something wrong with my thumbs. I just can’t do it, but I did do a lot of research on the world and Vault Dwellers and Vault-Tec, and I ended up watching a lot of other people playing the game, which worked out a lot better for me, because I got to experience it without having to suck at it!”
Purnell went on to say that starring in Fallout “helped me understand video games and fans and fandom and passion and all of those things that I had such little understanding of before. Now [that] just feels like the heart and soul of everything we do.”
Back in 2024, Purnell said she was going to avoid starring in any more video game adaptations after landing roles in Fallout and Arcane to avoid being “typecast”.
In other news, Mario Tennis Fever is out tomorrow (February 12) and according to early reviews, the sports game is an ace arcade multiplayer game with a questionable single-player campaign.
