The veteran actor played Dr. Martin Brenner, aka “Papa,” a scientist who raised and trained Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). The character was the main antagonist of season one, before appearing in the show’s second and fourth seasons. The star is also known for big screen dramas such as Full Metal Jacket and Oppenheimer.

Fans have been unhappy about Stranger Things’ finale, with the episode being accused of leaving various plot holes and ambiguity throughout. A recent post by the actor on Instagram prompted a follower to ask Modine: “Hey papa did you like the finale of stranger things?” The actor replied with a blunt: “Nope”.

Another follower asked if he believed in the Conformity Gate theory, that posits that there is a secret ninth episode in season five where it’s revealed the show’s original ending was a fantasy concocted by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Fans online have pointed to various continuity errors and messages that could be considered clues, however thus far it appears the show’s current ending is the legitimate one. When asked: “Does Papa believe in Stranger Things episode 9?”, Modine replied “hoping so for the fans”.

While critics were more generous in their reviews, season five received a 53 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score in the show’s history. Despite the poor reception from fans, streams of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘When Doves Cry’ have more than doubled on Spotify following their inclusion in the Stranger Things finale.

Recently, it was announced that a spin-off to the show, Stranger Things: Tales From 85, would be arriving on the streaming service in April.
