‘The Mandalorian And Grogu’ nods to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ in new trailer

The Mandalorian And Grogu has dropped a new teaser trailer ahead of the film’s release this May.

The new project will see the eponymous Mandalorian character (played by Pedro Pascal) head to the big screen for the first time, accompanied by fan favourite sidekick Grogu, aka Baby Yoda.

Following a trailer back in September, which showcased new cast addition Sigourney Weaver, a new teaser dropped during last night’s (February 8) Super Bowl focusing on the two central characters.

In it, we see Din Djarin and Grogu riding a carriage through a snowy environment, driven by Tauntauns – which were prominent in the icy world of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back.

A voiceover – since confirmed to be Sam Elliott – declares as the action takes place: “Sometimes we choose our path, sometimes the path chooses us. Through it all, we keep pushing forward driven by a deeper purpose. Guided by an unseen force. The journey never gets any easier. The bond just gets harder to break. This is the way.”

The Mandalorian And Grogu will mark the first Star Wars big screen project in seven years and comes from director Jon Favreau, who is behind the original Disney+  series, with new Lucasfilm president and chief creative officer Dave Filoni co-writing.

Speaking about the project previously, Favreau said: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The film’s synopsis teases: “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

Alongside Weaver, who portrays the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers leader and colonel Ward, Jeremy Allen White will appear as Jabba The Hutt’s son, Rotta.

The Mandalorian And Grogu will be succeeded by several further Star Wars projects in the next few years, including Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling, as well as a new Jedi order film that will see the return of Daisy Ridley‘s Rey, and a new trilogy from X-Men‘s Simon Kinberg.

In other news, last night’s Super Bowl was headlined by Bad Bunny in a widely praised performance that celebrated many Latin styles and included dancers and complex setpieces. There were also collaborations with Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, as well as cameos from Mandalorian actor Pascal alongside Cardi B, Jessica Alba and Karol G.

The show also included a poignant message of unity as Bad Bunny listed the nations of Central, South and North America, while a billboard declared: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”. However, US President Donald Trump criticised the performance.
