The movie, which is being distributed by A24, is situated amid the global hysteria around Charli’s 2024 album ‘Brat’ and its subsequent tour, and acts as a satirical comment on the realities of the mainstream music industry.
Directed by Aidan Zamiri, it was made by using real footage from the ‘Brat’ tour alongside fictional backstage scenes in which Charli interacts with Alexander Skarsgård, Rachel Sennott, Hailey Benton Gates, Jamie Demetriou, Kate Berlant, Rosanna Arquette and Kylie Jenner.
The first trailer arrived in November, and was followed up by a second teaser in December. The latter saw snippets of the pop star debating if the term ‘Brat Summer’ was “cringe”, and her marketing team struggling to promote her music “without offending anyone”.
The film had its world premiere at Sundance in January and it is released into UK cinemas on February 20.
It comes at a time when Charli is spending more and more time working in film, with other upcoming projects including indie drama Erupcja and satirical thriller Sacrifice. She will also star opposite Natalie Portman in The Gallerist and make an appearance in I Want Your Sex with Olivia Wilde.
Her next new music – following on from the ‘Brat’ album and its subsequent remix record – will be the soundtrack album for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
That film arrives in cinemas from February 11 and stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Songs that have been shared so far from the album include ‘Chains Of Love’ and the John Cale-starring ‘House’.
