Yesterday (January 27), a number of publications and YouTubers shared their impressions of Resident Evil Requiem following a three-hour hands-on session.
The ninth mainline Resident Evil game sees the return of fan-favourite soldier Leon and newcomer Grace Ashcroft. “Experience terrifying survival horror with FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, and dive into pulse-pounding action with legendary agent Leon S. Kennedy,” Capcom said in a press release. “Both of their journeys and unique gameplay styles intertwine into a heart-stopping, emotional experience that will chill you to your core.”
“Where Leon can round-house kick zombies in the face, Grace makes do with a clumsy push. Leon is all-out assault, but the best course of action for Grace is slow and deliberate stealth, because if you do try to take some of the new enemies head-on, you’re going to have a bad time,” wrote IGN in their preview.
Developers have confirmed that the action and stealth levels will each make up 50 per cent of the game.“The balance between two distinct tones and modes of play worked well in the limited context of the demo, each enhancing the other by contrast, and I’m excited to see how it pans out over the whole game,” said Xbox Wire. “The Resident Evil series has ranged widely over the last 30 years and Requiem’s developers have managed the impressive feat of a sequel that embraces all of it.”
“The switch between tense horror and empowered catharsis sounds brilliant. Can totally see their vision here and glad they’re trying something unique,” wrote one Reddit user. “That sounds awesome honestly. I’ve always wanted something like this,” said another. “This game looks insane. I don’t want to watch any more new footage, I’m gonna wait for the release date,” added a third.
However others aren’t so sure. “The split thing never works for me because I always prefer one over the other,” explained a Reddit user. “The individual parts sound and look great but if they keep throwing you between two completely different types of experiences then it could end up hurting the game as whole,” said another.
Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
In other news, the soundtrack from Half-Life: Alyx is being released on vinyl for the very first time.
