The former Sith Lord was first introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 1999, and has since appeared in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, as well as the 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story.
His spin-off, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, was first announced at Star Wars Celebration last year, as part of a panel celebrating 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni and animation vice president Athena Portillo announced the it would be the studio’s next animated series.
Based on a new teaser trailer, it’ll premiere on April 6. It’ll begin on Disney+ with a double episode, with two episodes airing weekly through to May 4 – check out the trailer below.
“We have all been made to suffer,” Maul says in the teaser, which gives fans their first look at the world of Janix, on which he plans to rebuild his criminal syndicate. “We survive but do not live.”
The series is set after Maul’s arc in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but before his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels. On Janix, says Lucasfilm, Maul “crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may just be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.”
Sam Witwer, who has previously voiced Maul along with other Star Wars characters, reprises his role for this series, while Gideon Adlon voices Devon Izara, the apprentice, and Wagner Moura and Richard Ayoade play police detective Captain Brander Lawson and his partner, the droid Two-Boots, respectively.
Other cast members include Dennis Haysbert, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, Vanessa Marshall, David W. Collins, A.J. LoCascio and Steve Blum.
Also arriving this year is the movie The Mandalorian And Grogu, a continuation of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Starring Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White and Jonny Coyne, it’s set to hit cinemas on May 22.
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi Series, meanwhile, is the first of several limited series to be released under the Visions Presents banner. The Ninth Jedi, set to come out this year, is a spinoff from the animated Star Wars: Visions TV show and continues the story of short films The Ninth Jedi and Child Of Hope.
