Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time was released in 2003 and rebooted the franchise after 1999’s Prince Of Persia 3D. Sales were slow at first but the game went on to sell more than 14million copies and inspired a number of sequels as well as a Hollywood adaptation.

A remake of The Sands Of Time was first announced in 2020 with a planned 2021 release date. After several delays, Ubisoft Montreal took over development and in 2023, an update claimed the project had passed an “important milestone” and development was ongoing, with a launch planned for 2026

However last night (January 21) Ubisoft confirmed Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time remake had been cancelled.

“To the Prince Of Persia community, we want to share this with you directly. We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake,” reads the statement. “We know this is deeply disappointing. The game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it.”

While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And, we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands Of Time represents,” it explained. “Prince Of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us. And this decision does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise.”

It’s one of several projects Ubisoft has scrapped, with four unannounced games also cancelled as part of a “major reset” at the studio. The games reportedly did not meet “the new enhanced quality [and] more selective portfolio prioritisation criteria”.

Seven other games have been delayed, but details about titles and release dates haven’t been shared. However it’s anticipated that the rumoured remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is one of the games affected.

“The portfolio refocus will have a significant impact on the Group’s short term financial trajectory, particularly in fiscal years 2026 and 2027, but this reset will strengthen the Group and enable it to renew with sustainable growth and robust cash generation,” said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in a statement. “Ubisoft is entering a new phase – one designed to reclaim creative leadership and build value for players and stakeholders over the long term.”

In other news, MIO: Memories In Orbit was released earlier this week and its incredible soundtrack is now available to stream.
