‘Roblox’ criticised for “super disturbing” Epstein Island build

Roblox is facing another wave of criticism after one player spent weeks recreating Epstein Island in the popular game.

Little Saint James, better known as Epstein Island, is a private island off the coast of Puerto Rico. It was owned by convicted sex offender Jefferey Epstein from 1998 until his death in 2019 and was reportedly his base for underage sex trafficking.

That hasn’t stopped one Roblox user from recreating Epstein Island in the hit game. The “Saint Silverlemon Isle” map includes a villa, several cabanas, a yacht, and a secret underground temple. The build was taken offline following backlash but you can watch a guided tour of the player-made creation here.

“A Roblox player spent weeks re-creating every aspect of Jeffery Epistein’s child sex island to exact hyper-realistic detail directly within the platform. Super disturbing,” wrote self-described Roblox safety advocate Schlep. “It’s actually fucking disgusting that a platform that advertises itself as ‘child friendly’ allows this shit on their platform,” added one X user. “It’s disgusting, but also impressive… how do you put this much work into being a fucking creep on Roblox??” wrote another.

Last year, the Roblox fan-made experience ‘Escape From Epstein Island’ was one of several creations that inspired at least three lawsuits to be filed against The Roblox Corporation.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he was taking legal action against Roblox for “flagrantly ignoring” safety laws and “deceiving parents” about the dangers the online platform poses. “I’m suing Roblox for putting pixel pedophiles and profits over the safety of Texas children,” he wrote on X. “We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators where the well-being of our kids is sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed.”

Responding to the allegations, Roblox bosses told the BBC that it is “disappointed” it is being sued based on “misrepresentations and sensationalised claims”.

However in a bizarre, tense interview with The New York Times, Roblox CEO David Baszucki was asked about “the problem of predators on Roblox?” to which he replied: “We think of it not necessarily just as a problem, but an opportunity as well.“ He went on to deny that Roblox was somewhere “predators go to find kids” even though “what you might read in the news would portray it that way.”

To try and make things safer, Roblox has been rolling out age verification features that restrict who users can chat to.

In other news, an 81-year-old Grandma has started streaming Minecraft to help raise funds for her grandson’s rare cancer treatment.
