Free-to-play mobile game The Sims Mobile was released back in 2018 as the successor to The Sims FreePlay. Similar to The Sims 4, Mobile allows players to create their own character and guide them through career and relationship milestones.

Despite complaints about the amount of microtransactions in the game, The Sims Mobile earned developers EA more than $15million in its first four months.

Despite players spending millions on the game, it will be taken offline next week (January 20). “Thank you so much for being part of this journey. Over the past 7 years, we’ve loved seeing everything the community has created,” developers wrote on X. “The Sims Mobile will no longer be accessible from January 20, 2026, at 1:59 PM UTC. At that time, the game will sunset, and save data will not be available. We hope you’ve enjoyed the final update, and we can’t wait to see you in the many other wonderful Sims games still to come.”

Hey Simmers,

Thank you so much for being part of this journey. Over the past 7+ years, we’ve loved seeing everything the community has created.

The news was first announced in October 2025 but no reason for the shut down has been shared. The decision by EA bosses has annoyed many gamers though. “This sucks and so does EA. I will never give them another $ or play any of their games again,” wrote one Reddit user. “This is why I have never and will never spend money on [microtransactions in] games. I’m so disappointed. They did the exact same thing with The Simpsons: Tapped Out,” added another.

“I’m only really accepting that this means my builds are gone and my Sims will be no more after playing for many years. It’s not the greatest Sims game ever but I thought it was mine to play as long as it was on my phone,” said a third.

EA are currently working on the multiplayer Project Rene and a live-action The Sims movie though a sequel to 2014’s The Sims 4 still isn’t being considered. “What I wouldn’t want to happen is you having to start from scratch and give up all of the things that you have created, give up all of the content that you’ve purchased over the years,” franchise president Laura Miele explained. “We put out over 85 content packs over the last 10 years on The Sims 4 and so resetting that is not player friendly and not a good idea for our community.”

The Sims bosses have said the company’s “values” won’t change following a $50billion takeover from a group of investors that includes Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner (CEO of Affinity Partners) and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. However, many popular streamers have already boycotted the game in protest.

In other news, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a new Fallout spin-off, inspired by reality competition Big Brother.
