Martina Radwan directed One Last Adventure: The Making Of Stranger Things 5, which looked at the making of the final season of the Netflix smash hit. During the documentary, it is revealed that creators The Duffer Brothers were still writing the script for the final episode, a revelation that alarmed some fans.
However, in an interview with BBC News, she explained “you can’t write everything ahead of time” and that the writer’s room process is more complicated than some might think.
“I think having access to the writer’s room is a real gift and a privilege that the brothers gave us,” she said, “because I think it’s very easy to think when you write a script, you literally just sit there and write. And it’s like: ‘No, it’s really thinking about a gazillion things, how you interweave all these stories’.
She concluded: “I mean, this is a massive ensemble cast and to cover 19 character developments, it’s quite a feat and an accomplishment.”
The finale saw the heroes of Hawkins face off against the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and some ambiguity surrounding the fate of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Many fans felt that some plot points were left unanswered, leading to an online theory named Conformity Gate, that proposed the idea that a secret, true finale was going to be released a week after the official final episode.
Fans expressed their frustration when that hypothetical episode never materialised, and Radwan admitted to being bemused by the theory. Describing it as “a little bizarre”, she asked: “why would they withhold that?”
