Elon Musk added AI chatbot Grok to X in 2023 and the tool was upgraded to include image generation the following year. According to several reports, the AI tool has been used to create deep fakes. Last week, Love Island host Maya Jama hit out at the growing trend of AI explicit images being shared on the platform. “The internet is scary & only getting worse,” she explained.

Following backlash, X owner Elon Musk put AI image creation behind a paywall. “We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary. Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” read a statement from Twitter.

A new UK law is also set to come into force later this week that will finally make AI deepfakes illegal after legislation was drawn up in July 2025 (via the BBC).

However video game voice acting legend Alix Wilton Regan has announced she has quit Twitter over the matter. In a statement shared on her Instagram, she explained she’s deactivated her account and won’t be returning.

“Why did I do it? Because men and boys are creating child pornography, deep fakes of women, violent images against women, girls and other minority groups without any repercussions,” she added. “So, it’s simple: If Elon won’t protect me, my sisters and my friends, then Elon doesn’t get my business or – more accurately – me as part of his business.”

“Many of us feel helpless and hopeless right now. But one easy thing we can all choose is where we spend our time and money. Use your currency wisely.”

And get excited, because we’re just getting started.”
