Everything is golden for “KPop Demon Hunters” which dominated categories at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, taking home two prestigious honors in a surprising victory for the unconventional film.

The Netflix and Sony Pictures animated feature won Best Animated Motion Picture beating out more traditional theatrical releases despite having no officially reported box office numbers. However, the film was the most watched original film ever on the Netflix platform, with over 500 million views. The win marks a significant moment for alternative distribution models in animation and demonstrates the changing landscape of how films reach audiences and gain recognition.

Co-director Maggie Kang accepted the award with an emotional and light-hearted speech that highlighted the film’s approach to character development.

“Through this film we really wanted to depict female characters the way that we know women, which is really strong and bold, really silly and weird, really hungry for food and sometimes really thirsty.”

The film’s unconventional portrayal of its female protagonists has resonated with audiences who have praised its authentic and multidimensional representation. Rather than adhering to traditional animated film stereotypes, “KPop Demon Hunters” presents its characters with all their complexities, contradictions, and humanity intact.

The film’s second win came in the Best Original Song category, with artist Ejae delivering a heartfelt acceptance speech that underscored the song’s emotional impact.

“I’m grateful to be part of a song that is helping girls, boys, and everyone of all ages get through hardship and accept to themselves,”

Ejae said, visibly moved by the recognition.

The song has become an anthem for self-acceptance across diverse communities, transcending the film itself to become a cultural touchstone. Social media has been flooded with testimonials and covers from fans of all ages.

“KPop Demon Hunters” blends the high-energy aesthetics of Korean pop music culture with supernatural action-adventure storytelling. The film’s unique premise and bold visual style have cultivated a devoted following, even without the traditional theatrical release that typically precedes major awards consideration. With the award season, we expect to see more achievements.
