Last night (January 11), the Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood’s awards season, with Chalamet marking a career first after being named Best Lead Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy for ping-pong epic Marty Supreme, beating out the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another) and George Clooney (Jay Kelly).

He has been nominated four times in the past, first for his breakout role in Call Me By Your Name, then for Beautiful Boy, Wonka, and last year’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, all without ever winning. Those defeats, he said on Sunday, made it more meaningful to finally win.

“My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up: ‘Always be grateful for what you have,’” he told the crowd. “It’s allowed me to leave the ceremony in the past empty-handed with my head held high, grateful just to be here.

“But I’d be lying if I said those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter.”

His acceptance speech continued: “Josh Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role. Thank you for believing in me. To A24 and Ronnie Bronstein, who co-wrote this with Josh, the amazing cast of this film. If you would have told me when I was 19 years old that I would be thanking Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank…”

After O’Leary was seen cracking a smile, Chalamet chuckled on stage, telling the Shark Tank star: “You are laughing, so I got away with that.” Rounding off his earlier train of thought, he added: “I would have been stunned, but I would have been very grateful.”

Earlier this month, he walked away with the gong for Best Actor for Marty Supreme at the Critics Choice Awards, and appeared visibly surprised when his name was called.

Having previously been earnest about his desire to “be one of the greats”, the shock of the win meant he stumbled on his words several times, which he explained was down to nerves. “I got a lot of people to thank. I don’t know if I’ll be up here again, so give me a second,” he told the crowd, saying: “Damn, I’m more nervous than I thought I’d be.”

Chalamet’s turn as ping pong obsessive Marty Mauser in the A24 film also earned a glowing five-star review from NME, with Jordan Bassett writing: The direction is so frenetic that it somehow makes table tennis even more thrilling than the rubber-burning race scenes in F1, while there are at least three jaw-dropping set-pieces that Safdie lands on you like gleefully delivered trick shots.

“This is a story about living a great life, however you may define that. It is a film about living fully and without fear, a cynicism-free zone where, for all their fast-talking, people love each other so much it makes your heart feel like it’s about to burst. Talk about a smash.”

In other news, EsDeeKid and Chalamet have put rumours that they were the same person to bed with a new collab.
