Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 despite rumours about blockbuster ports.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched last year with a number of developers excited about finally bringing huge titles to a Nintendo console. FromSoftware are releasing Elden Ring on the handheld later this year, 2K Games’ Borderlands 4 is already available and even Call Of Duty is reported to arrive in the near future.

However it looks like Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be making the leap. In a recent Reddit AMA, one fan asked Larian developers if a Switch 2 port of the hit fantasy role-playing game was possible. “We would have loved to but it wasn’t our decision to make,” replied boss Swen Vincke.

To create Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian licensed characters from Wizards Of The Coast’s Dungeons And Dragons series. The deal earned Wizards Of The Coast more than £71million in royalties but Larian scrapped plans for a DLC and a sequel to work on an original idea.

I don’t understand the decision not to bring Baldur’s Gate III to Switch 2 if it’s possible. It would sell more copies guaranteed.

Unless porting the game would be too intensive money-wise, or it can’t actually run on Switch 2. https://t.co/s95NftTv0i

WOTC has also confirmed they’ll be making Baldur’s Gate 4 without Larian. “We’re talking to lots of partners and being approached by a lot of partners who are embracing the challenge of, what does the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise look like,” said a spokesperson from the company. It’s perhaps why they’re not interested in bringing Baldur’s Gate 3 to the Nintendo Switch 2.

However the news hasn’t gone down well with fans. “I read this and fell down to my knees,” wrote one Reddit user. “Sad for anyone who wanted to play it on the Switch 2. Hasbro and Wizards Of The Coast apparently don’t give a fuck that Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most well produced games ever,” said another. ‘It runs so well on the Steam Deck now, I’m really surprised there won’t be a Switch 2 version,” added a third.

Instead of working on more Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian are currently developing a new instalment in their own Divinity series.

Divinity marks “the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before,” explained Vincke. “We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.” No release date has been confirmed yet.

In other news, hugely popular free-to-play video game PUBG Mobile has revealed a collaboration with Peaky Blinders that runs until February 5.
