In the two hour final episode of the Netflix hit, the heroes of Hawkins finally defeat the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and destroy The Upside Down for good. However, Eleven appears to sacrifice herself so that her blood cannot be used by the government to create more children with abilities like hers.
The show then flashes forward 18 months to reveal her friends graduating from high school, and concluding their ongoing Dungeons & Dragons campaign. During this final meeting, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) shares his theory that Eleven faked her death in order to keep herself and her friends safe, and has found a new life away from danger. The remaining friends choose to believe this idea, although the truth is left open to interpretation.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creators The Duffer Brothers shared what they think happened to the character.
Asked if they “believe” Eleven is alive, Ross Duffer replied: “I don’t know if we want to say. Obviously, we’ve had these conversations with Millie too, and we all have our own interpretations. I worry if I say it, it might take away. We really want the audience to take from it what they want.”
Matt Duffer added: “The characters don’t know because they can’t know and the audience can’t know because then it puts Eleven in danger and her sacrifice was for nothing. So there’s a point in not knowing. The boys obviously choose to believe. I’m not sure what the majority of people are thinking, but dipping my toes a little bit into social media, it seems like people are choosing to believe and are going the Mike Wheeler route.”
Stranger Things concluded on New Year’s Eve (December 31), with Variety reporting the show debuted to 59.6million views, a record debut for an English-language title on the streamer.
Not every episode impressed, however, with the final episode of volume two being among the worst-rated ever by fans.
