The trailer for Shrinking season three has offered the first glimpse of Michael J. Fox’s return to acting – watch it below.
In May, it was revealed that the Back To The Future star would be playing a guest role in the new season of the Apple TV show when it returns in the new year, his first acting role since 2020.
The show, created by Ted Lasso’s Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, will return to the streaming service for its third run on January 28, with episodes set to arrive weekly until the season finale on April 8.
The trailer for the season has now been released, and it features a clip of Fox, playing a character visiting the office of therapist Paul Rhodes, played by Harrison Ford. Fox’s character jokes that he’s come in for “a haircut”, but Rhodes confirmed that he is seeing him to treat his Parkinson’s disease.

Harrison Ford’s character was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s in season one, although it remains unknown exactly how the issue will be tackled in the new episodes.
Fox has previously worked with Lawrence on the sitcom Spin City from 1996 to 2000, a show he was forced to quit as his symptoms worsened. Fox also had a two-episode arc as a genius doctor with OCD in Lawrence’s Scrubs.
The entire depiction of Parkinson’s in Shrinking was inspired by Fox to begin with, with Lawrence having stated: “I found the first mentor in my life and career, Michael J. Fox, to be so inspiring. The way he took it in stride and continues to work harder than anybody I know. And we want to kind of carry that spirit if we can into the show.”
Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age of 29 in 1991 and retired from acting in 2020. He went on to found the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000 to help fund research into finding a cure. His last roles to date come in the form of the TV series The Good Fight, and the 2021 film Back Home Again, for which he provided voice acting in 2020.
In April 2024, he shared that he was open to the idea of acting again: “If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great. I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out.”
