On November 4, Mamdani emerged victorious as NYC’s new mayor over opponents Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, winning with over 50 per cent of the vote. He will take over from Democrat Eric Adams, who has served as the mayor since 2022.

Ahead of him taking office on New Year’s Day, Mamdani spoke to Interview Magazine, where he revealed the songs that get him “hyped”.

“I have a few songs,” he told the publication. “My wife prefers calmer music in the morning. I, for some reason, want to listen to Kim Petras or Lil Wayne or Madonna.”

“At eight in the morning, it doesn’t make much sense,” he said, adding that her recent single ‘I Like Your Look’ is a “great song”.

It’s not the first time Mamdani has shared his love for Petras’ music. Last month, a clip of him asking a DJ to play Kim Petras went viral on TikTok and X.

Now, Petras has responded, taking to X to share a screenshot of the interview and writing: “Zohran Mamdani I am willing to privately send you my new album if we can get the horse carriages banned from Central Park.”

Petras then replied to her own post with a YouTube video screenshot titled “Mamdani makes transition announcement,” adding: “The signs were always there…” – a joke nodding to her identity as a trans woman.

Mamdani previously acknowledged the “significant issue” of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, and has supported a potential ban.

Mamdani will also become the first Ugandan-American and Indian-American to serve as the New York mayor.

Upon him winning the election, various figures from the entertainment world reacted, including LordeGracie Abrams and Halsey.

Abrams posted a series of stories celebrating Mamdani’s election, sharing: “I keep getting chills over and over”. Lorde also weighed in following her endorsement of Mamdani in June, posting a story with the words ‘CHANGE NEW YORK’ and tagging the soon-to-be mayor.

In the comment sections of Mamdani’s posts announcing his win, other entertainment figures chimed in with their support. Clairo posted a fire emoji, while actor Mark Ruffalo wrote: “Congratulation [sic], Mayor Mamdani!”. Rachel Zegler went on to write “he’s home!”, while Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui posted: “Thank God!! May you be protected and guided!! Yayyyy!”

Mamdani has previously interacted with popstars, making a suprise appearance at PinkPantheress’ NYC show just days before the election. The British singer unveiled Mamdani’s appearance by showing a pair of hands on the venue’s screen, with “Our Time Has Come” and “Vote Nov. 4” written on the two palms.

As the camera pulled back, Mamdani was revealed as her special guest, with the crowd greeting him with loud cheers.

He also popped up during Lucy Dacus’ show at All Things Go in New York earlier this year and made a brief speech during the set. “This is what our city should feel like,” he told the crowd. “It should be a city where trans New Yorkers are cherished, a city where our queer neighbours are celebrated, and a city where each and every New Yorker can be the fullest version of themselves. And it has to be a city that all of us can afford.”
