Announced last week at The Game Awards 2025, Divinity is the next game from Larian Studios after they scrapped work on a sequel to the beloved Baldur’s Gate 3.
The ambitious role-playing game is a follow-up to 2017’s Divinity: Original Sin 2 but newcomers won’t need to play previous games to understand what’s going on. In a press release, Larian boss Swen Vincke said the studio was ready to “bring everything we’ve done previously into one place.
Divinity marks “the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before,” he continued. “We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.” The announcement came alongside a gory cinematic trailer.

In a new interview, Vincke has revealed more details about what fans can expect from Divinity. “I will say that it’s bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3 and if you like [that game], this is gonna be great,” he told IGN.
“We certainly want to innovate but there are some core pillars that we don’t need to change. It’s going to be a single-player game, and it’s also going to be a cooperative multiplayer game. Within our formula, there’s still plenty of room for innovation,” he continued. “There will be more agency, more freedom, and more shenanigans. The combination of all these things is the thing that will surprise people the most.”
He went on to say that “the pressure is high,” following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. “We feel the pressure on our shoulders especially because we set high ambitions for ourselves. But the opposite of that would be that we say, ‘Oh, you know what, we’ll just make a lesser game.’ That wouldn’t be very motivating at all.”
There’s currently no release date for Divinity and development started back in 2023. Earlier this week, Vincke was criticised for using AI in the early stages of Divinity’s development but that decision was defended by Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 boss Daniel Vávra. “I’m no fan of AI generated art, but anyway, it’s time to face reality. AI is here to stay with us.”
In other news, Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers have revealed season five of the Netflix hit has been inspired by Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid video games.
