‘Wallace And Gromit’ creator plans to use AI in future projects

The creator of Wallace And Gromit has discussed AI’s place in future projects, saying they will “embrace” the innovations without sacrificing the human element.

Nick Park created Aardman Animations in 1972, which came to be known for the Wallace And Gromit films and movies such as Chicken Run. The studio is famous for using clay stop-motion animation, and Park was recently asked if AI could be included in future animated projects.

“When Toy Story came out [in 1995], we thought, ‘How long have we got?’ But we’ve managed to survive CGI,” Park told Radio Times (via GamesRadar). “In fact, there’s been a resurgence of interest over the years in our stop-motion animation. We use CGI as well, but AI is a whole new thing.”

He continued: “Obviously a lot of people will be fearing for their jobs. We want to embrace the technology and find in what ways it’s going to be useful to us, maybe to do animation a bit quicker, but we’re going to be very cautious not to lose our values.

“The clay is our USP and we pride ourselves in that. Authenticity is the most important thing. It’s where the charm is.”

A.I. has been a hot button topic in many industries, with the animation world worrying that generative A.I. may take the place of human artists. Soft drinks brand Coca-Cola recently unveiled an entirely A.I. animated Christmas commercial for the second year in a row, sparking backlash online despite the company’s claims of innovation.

Movie star Leonardo DiCaprio recently spoke about the use of AI in the arts, saying that the even “brilliant” AI generated music “dissipates into the ether of other internet junk.”

Earlier this year, the directors of the most recent Wallace And Gromit film revealed they have every’ pun in the script checked by legal because people are so “litigious” now.
