NME’s entertainment editor Alex Flood spoke to the comedy star alongside George Clooney, ahead of the release of the pair’s new film Jay Kelly. Clooney plays a celebrated movie star who travels across Europe with his manager (Sandler), reflecting on their life and the choices they made. You can watch the full interview in the video above.
During the interview, we asked if the actors could name one album that they always go back to. Immediately, Sandler replied: “You know what entire album I listened to? No problem. Hole, ‘Live Through This.’”
He then recalled first hearing it. “I remember I was on tour. I was doing standup and uh that album just came out and I was in my car a lot and I listened to the track one and I was like, ‘Ooh, that was Nasty’. Track two, I was like, ‘two for two.’ And then I just said, ‘I guess this whole album is going to be great.’”

He then recalled going to see the band at a gig and running into his The Wedding Singer co-star Drew Barrymore. “I saw [Hole] when I was in Missouri. I had a standup gig and I ended and a friend of mine said, ‘You should come over to such and such theater. Hole’s on.’ I was like, ‘Hole is here? Let’s go.’ And I went over there and Drew Barrymore was going out with the guitar player at the time. I remember I was just sitting way in the back, the show was incredible, and Drew came out. They introduced Drew and she came out. I was like ‘I know that girl’ and it was a cool night.”
As for Clooney, the Oscar winner went for The Beatles’ classic ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. “There’s not a bad track on it,” he enthused, “the way we thought about things changed and the music changed. So when I listen to those songs, you know,
my wife, it’s funny because you know, she knows all the Beatles songs, but a lot of times it’ll be because somebody else sang them. She’ll be like, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s…’ and I go, “No, no, no, no, no. That’s The Beatles.”
