Charlie Cox doesn’t deserve Best Performance nomination for ‘Clair Obscur’, say fans

Charlie Cox has been nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025 but some fans claim he doesn’t deserve the recognition.

Charlie Cox voices Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the leader of a rag-tag expedition to defeat the murderous Paintress and provide safety for the remaining citizens of Lumière.

Last night, his voice acting was nominated for Best Performance at the 2025 Game Awards alongside castmates Jennifer English (Myel) and Ben Starr (Verso). Indiana Jones And The Great Circle’s Troy Baker, Ghost Of Yōtei’s Erika Ishii and Silent Hill f’s Konatsu Kato were also nominated.

Baker previously told NME that playing Indiana Jones almost “broke” him while Kato has said she spent so long in the world of Silent Hill f, she “felt my own sanity slipping”.

However earlier this year, Cox revealed he spent just one four-hour session working on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. “I’m not a gamer [and] I haven’t played it. People keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations but I feel like a total fraud,” he added.

Because of this, several gaming fans have said he doesn’t deserve to win the Best Performance trophy at The Game Awards 2025.

“Nominating Charlie Cox is why nobody takes the gaming industry seriously. He voiced a character, it took him four hours and he didn’t know what it was. The undying thirst of this industry for validation from Hollywood,” wrote one fan. “I’m not trying to sound like a hater, but was it really necessary to nominate Expedition 33 for three Best Performance nominations? It’s very disappointing that Tom McKay’s outstanding performance in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was completely overlooked,” added another.

However plenty of people have defended the nomination. “I’m seeing some people complaining about Charlie Cox being nominated cause he didn’t spend much time recording but have you considered the fact that he did such a phenomenal job in such a short time that Gustave literally became one of the most beloved video game characters ever,” wrote one fan. “If anything, it shows how consistently good he is,” said another.

The winners of The Game Awards 2025 will be revealed on December 11 and voting is now open.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed a live-action adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is in the works. Hollywood star Glen Powell has said he’s “very interested” in being involved.

In other news, it’s been reported that physical sales of Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 are more than 60 per cent lower than Black Ops 6.
