‘Metroid Prime’ fans are worried long-awaited sequel will be a disaster

Metroid Prime fans are worried Beyond is going to be a disaster after waiting more than eight years for the sequel.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was first announced back in 2017 but Nintendo scrapped the project and started over in 2019 because that first attempt didn’t reach “the standard” of previous entries in the action-adventure series. A release trailer was finally unveiled last year, giving fans their first proper look at bounty hunter Samus Aran’s latest mission but Nintendo haven’t revealed many details about the game, even though it’s due to launch next month.

Last week a handful of previews were shared and now Metroid Prime fans are starting to get worried about the new game.

“Everything was going great… until specialist Myles MacKenzie crashed the party,” wrote IGN, criticising the “extraordinarily talkative companion who’s constantly spewing unwanted hints, quippy jokes and cries for help [which] break the isolated, atmospheric themes Metroid is known for.”

I was looking forward to Metroid Prime 4 but no way am I asking Santa for a game with acting & dialogue this shit

“I don’t want to blow things out of proportion, but he really did tarnish my time with the game,” said NintendoLife in their report. “[Hopefully] he’s saved and sent home nice and early and never spoken of again, or better yet, suffers a painful, embarrassing death offscreen.”

“The presence of this annoying, chatty git pierces the ambient wonder of this ancient temple Samus is exploring. One of Prime‘s greatest strengths, its atmospheric prowess, is punctured. His bleating adds nothing to combat encounters,” added Eurogamer.

Every Metroid Prime 4 Beyond preview HATES Miles MacKenzie.

Miles is a side-character who speaks too much. This results in breaking the isolation feeling of the Prime series. The rest of the game is ok in every preview I have read or watched so far. pic.twitter.com/g98ChCvajj

“One of the most defining aspects of Metroid is the sheer isolation of being alone in a haunting world where almost everything is hostile to Samus. I really hope the sidekick is just basically a ‘tutorial’ to teach you the mechanics and then maybe he gets killed off or captured,” wrote one fan in response. “Waiting 18 years for a new Prime game only to have it feature a jokey talkative sidekick is a massive monkey’s paw. I hope this dude gets killed an hour in,” added another.

However other fans have pointed out how the previews were based on an hour of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and might not be a fair representation of what’s to come when the game launches December 4. “Either way, this has gone from a Day One purchase to a wait and see,” wrote one fan.

In other news, the worst reviewed games of 2025 have been revealed, with two Star Wars titles and a Game Of Thrones spin-off making the list.
