I don’t have the time of day to tell you what I want to hear
That’s why I cover both of my ears
Your intentions are a bird I fear.”
London-based auteur Jojo Orme, known under the moniker Heartworms, returns with a foreboding new single titled Extraordinary Wings. The new track comes as the latest preview of her highly anticipated album ‘Glutton For Punishment, set for release on February 7 via Speedy Wunderground.
This release marks a new artistic direction for Heartworms, bringing her into an art-pop realm evoking PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Massive Attack. The lyrics to Extraordinary Wings unfold like a myth in motion, a tense interplay of fascination, fear, and the restless pull of self-destruction. The imagery of wings and flight recalls the story of Icarus—soaring ambition shadowed by the inevitability of a fall. Like Icarus, one is drawn to something extraordinary, yet fears the cost of reaching too high.
There’s also a sense of resistance, a refusal to be consumed by destructive impulses, mirroring the restraint of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and transformation, who wields his power to renew rather than ruin. The refrain “I destroy the fallen” echoes Shiva’s dance of renewal, while the acknowledgment, “I don’t wish murder,” reveals a struggle with control, choosing not to wield harm. Through its aching tension and symbolic depth, the song becomes a meditation on ambition, fear, and the possibility of transformation amid chaos. It is, in short, a mantra for these troubling times.
With her latest material, Orme leaps further from the foundation of her acclaimed 2023 EP, A Comforting Notion, delving into the complexities of her family relationships. This new work brims with both daring and depth. Teaming up once again with filmmaker Gilbert Trejo, she and actor Jamie Delaney conjure a spellbinding black-and-white video, steeped in dramatic German Expressionist angles and the wrenching anguish of Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet On The Western Front (1930).
Orme’s face becomes a canvas of raw emotion, its expressiveness anchoring the surreal tale of a paratrooper navigating unfamiliar terrain. The sweeping pastoral backdrops—equal parts eerie and enchanting—echo the windswept moors of classic English literature, shrouding the story in timeless intrigue. Is she a hallucination? A siren? A whispering conscience? The answers shift like mist over the fields, leaving the viewer to decide. It’s a cinematic and musical leap that, while grounded in Orme’s introspections, soars into the realm of mythic storytelling.

Comprised of nine songs, Glutton For Punishment explores themes of broken families and broken relationships, along with a sense of embracing chaos. “We’re all so drawn to punishing ourselves, and I’m always drawn to singing about it, and thinking about it,” Orme said. Produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey, the LP is also set to make nods to artists like Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey, and LCD Soundsystem.
