The Twin Peaks creator’s death was announced Thursday (January 16) by his family, which followed claims he was “forced to relocate from his house” due to the Los Angeles wildfires. He was aged 78.

Sarandos has now taken to Instagram to pay tribute to the film-maker, talking about his collaborations with Netflix and the popularity of his films with customers from their early days as a DVD mailing service. He also spoke about a project that he had pitched to them that the company were enthusiastic about.

Sarandos wrote: “He came into Netflix to pitch a limited series which we jumped at. It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius”.

He went on to say: “David Lynch was an unapologetic genius. He didn’t want you to understand his work. He knew that was impossible and it was part of the ride together”.

During his career, Lynch directed 12 feature films, and created the cult show Twin Peaks, along with its follow-up Twin Peaks: The Return. He was nominated for four Oscars and eight Emmys, receiving the Academy Honorary Award during the 2019 Oscar season. His most celebrated works include The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive.

Tributes have poured in from all areas of entertainment since the news of Lynch’s passing. Legendary director Steven Spielberg described him as “an original and unique voice”, while music acts Lykke Li and Duran Duran have also commented on his influence. Figures in the world of gaming have shared various memories of the film-maker, describing him as “your favourite game designer’s favourite creator”.

David Lynch‘s children have encouraged fans to join in a “worldwide group meditation” in his honour, which will take place later today (January 20).
