As we begin a new year, we had the chance to sit down with the ever-evolving artist, Big Mooky. 2024 was a defining year for him, filled with milestones that have set the stage for even bigger things ahead. From his first regional tour to releasing multiple EPs and securing key collaborations, Big Mooky’s passion for his craft has been evident at every turn. In this exclusive interview, we reflect on the achievements of the past year, the challenges he faced, and what fans can look forward to in 2025.
Q1: How has 2024 been a defining year for you as an artist, and what are some of the key highlights or milestones you’ve achieved this year?
Big Mooky: When I tell people I had planned more for 2024, they tell me I’m crazy. In 2024, I put together my first regional tour, had my biggest year for press, shot multiple visuals, released three EPs, went to Vegas for the BET Hip Hop Awards, and managed to meet and get a feature from one of my favorite artists (TBD). Prior to 2024, I had never been on tour, never headlined more than a single show, and had never released an EP. It was truly a year full of new experiences, and I’m glad that my first EP release Wake up, Mooky got the attention it did.
Q2: Can you describe any specific personal or creative growth you’ve experienced in your music or artistry over the past year?
Big Mooky: I think I’ve finally begun to understand my sound or “niche.” Spotify called my music “emo stoner skater rap,” and I f with that heavy, but I’m still not gonna let it define me. Prior to this year, I’d just been releasing singles, so three EPs feels crazy, but I felt like the listeners needed it because they’ve been hearing the same songs live for long enough.
Q3: What are some of the challenges you faced in 2024, both creatively and professionally, and how did you overcome them?
Big Mooky: Putting together my first tour was crazy exciting but also hella stressful because there’s nobody telling me how to do this or what to do next, which is definitely a blessing and a curse. A lot of self-learning involved.
Q4: This year has seen a lot of innovation in music. How have you experimented with new sounds or concepts in your latest releases?
Big Mooky: I always try my best to incorporate sounds from my inspirations and mix that with what I wish music sounded like. Does that make sense? The result is a lot of genre-bending madness. I rap, but my shows are more like metal shows, get me?
Q5: What inspired the themes or messages in your music released this year, and how do they reflect your current mindset or life experiences?
Big Mooky: My music tends to have the same general theme or message, which is: do as best as you can do, be better than you used to be, count money, raise up those around you, and pursue love. All of that with a self-deprecating, self-aware nihilistic spin.
Q6: Are there any particular collaborations or partnerships in 2024 that were especially significant for you? If so, what made them stand out?
Big Mooky: I was able to release a lot of my collabs with my brother Lago Link, which felt great because I know he hasn’t been releasing recently. It was also good to put that Neem the Animist feature out there too. A lot of crazy features to be dropped in 2025.
Q7: As we move into 2025, what are some lessons from this year that you plan to carry with you into your future projects?
Big Mooky: Going into 2025, I know I really have to trust my process and trust my gut. I got named the #1 artist to watch this year, and I don’t take that lightly. Nobody should take advice from somebody who is somewhere they don’t want to be. Surround yourself with success.
Q8: How have your fans and audience responded to your music this year, and how has their feedback influenced your direction?
Big Mooky: The support from my fans has been really uplifting. Releasing songs in small batches like this really helps me figure out which songs shine out from the rest, and the fans are ready to interact with that process.
Q9: In 2024, the music industry saw shifts in trends and platforms. How have you adapted to these changes, and what strategies have worked best for you?
Big Mooky: I haven’t been doing this too long, but long enough to know that I have to trust my art, my sound, and my vision, despite what’s going on out there. I love listening to new music, so oftentimes my vision and what’s popping off are one and the same, but that’s not what matters at the end of the day.
Q10: Looking ahead, what are your goals for 2025, and what can your audience expect from you in the coming year?
Big Mooky: 2025 is going to be full of a lot of visuals and crazy collaborations that my fans probably did not expect. I want to be a moving target that always hits. If you get it, you get it.
Big Mooky’s journey through 2024 has been nothing short of impressive, and as he steps into 2025, there’s no doubt that his momentum will continue. With exciting visuals, unexpected collaborations, and more growth on the horizon, we can’t wait to see where his sound takes him next. Thank you, Big Mooky, for sharing your story, and here’s to another year of breakthroughs and success!
