Kojima joined Konami in 1986 where he directed, designed and wrote the first game in what would become the long-running Metal Gear Solid franchise. That game is also said to have laid the foundations for the stealth genre as a whole.
He made several more games with Konami before going solo in 2015. His first independent release was the critically-acclaimed Death Stranding.
Kojima is currently working on Death Stranding 2: On The Beach as well as a big screen adaptation. He’s also developing a game with celebrated horror director Jordan Peele and has plans for a new stealth game, codename Physint.
However in a new post on social media, Kojima has revealed that he doesn’t know how much longer he’ll be working in gaming.
“At this age, I can’t help but think about how much longer I’ll be able to stay ‘creative’,” he wrote.
“I want to keep going for the rest of my life, but is it 10 more years? 20? Every day feels like I’m racing against the clock. Even now, at 87, Ridley Scott is still active. And back when he was past 60 – my current stage in life – he created the masterpiece Gladiator.”

When Physint was announced last February, Kojima explained that 2026 would mark his 40th anniversary of game development. He went on to call Physint the “culmination of my work” and said “we hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games,” with the title.
At the end of last year, Kojima confirmed that both OD and Physint had been delayed due to the voice actors strike but Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is still due to release this year.
“I haven’t said the release date [yet], but the release date has already been decided, and I’m currently working on it in preparation for that,” he explained at September’s Tokyo Game Show. To make up for the lack of solid news, he shared over eight-minutes of new footage from the blockbuster sequel.
In other news, virtual pop star Hatsune Miku has joined Fortnite Festival alongside a Rock Band-inspired local co-op mode.
