Robbie Williams has said he wasn’t bothered by past accusations of him being gay, saying that “you’ve never met somebody that wants to be gay as much as me”.

The subject came up in an interview with The Guardian when the former Take That star was asked about the time he sued a newspaper for libel in 2004 when it published an interview with his alleged “secret gay lover”, suggesting that he was deceiving the public by claiming he was having sex with women to hide his “sordid homosexual encounters with strangers”. Williams won substantial damages and an apology.
Williams asked the interviewer, Michael Cragg, his sexuality. After Cragg said he was gay, Williams replied: “OK, I’ll ask you this: There is a front cover of a newspaper that is read by millions and a lady has said you have performed cunnilingus on her by a canal. Do you, as a gay person, sue the newspaper?”
Cragg said he wouldn’t sue but would nonetheless be annoyed about being falsely represented.
“I was annoyed. I was more sad,” Williams continued. “Not about gay accusations because look, I’ve done everything but suck a cock. Honestly, you’ve never met somebody that wants to be gay as much as me.
“I’m a Port Vale fan and it’s like somebody going, ‘Well you’re a Liverpool fan.’ And me saying, ‘No I’m not, I’m a Port Vale fan.’ When somebody says you’re a Liverpool fan a hundred times it’s like, ‘I’m not a fucking Liverpool fan, why do people think I’m a Liverpool fan?!’”
Later, he added: “You want to be an ally while at the same time protecting your own authenticity and your own life. Besides, if I want to suck a cock, I’ll suck a cock. Who’s going to fucking stop me? My wife? The beard!”
Williams is gearing up to release his new biopic, Better Man, which will be released on Boxing Day. In it, the singer is depicted as a CGI monkey, and the film tells the story of his life and career – from his early days in childhood to his first taste of success with boyband Take That.
He recently revealed that former bandmate Gary Barlow got an early look at the biopic and his response prompted Williams to soften the way Barlow – who he has had a contentious relationship with – in the final edits.
“We had a fractious relationship. In the script, I speak how I thought back then, which wasn’t complimentary to Gaz, and we sent him the script,” Williams said (via Daily Mail). “He rang me and, he’s a grown-up and there was no effing or pointing fingers, and he was like, ‘Rob, I come off worse than Darth Vader in the first half.’”
In other news, Williams recently came to the defense of Oasis following the controversy around the dynamic pricing tickets of their 2025 reunion tour.
“I don’t believe that Oasis knew. Liam definitely didn’t know “this is how much tickets are going to cost. We’re going to do this thing called dynamic pricing.” I only know about dynamic pricing because of Oasis.”
Williams believes that the backlash has taught the music industry that they “can’t take the piss”. He added, “That whole dynamic pricing thing, it even made me go: ’Fuck, I need to be in some sort of meeting.’ Or just go: ’Let’s not have that happen!’”
