Aespa‘s Karina recently posted pictures of herself backstage SBS‘s Inkigayo.
It was already ‘liked’ over two million times, with thousands of fans proclaiming their awe at her beauty.

After this was posted, however, some Korean netizens commented their disapproval of Karina’s makeup. One community post described her makeup as “shocking” since it was “not this obvious on stage.”
They were particularly surprised at how her aegyosal was drawn on very noticeably. Aegyosal refers to the rolls underneath one’s lower eyelids that are similar to eye bags. They are often drawn on K-Pop idols to give an added illusion of youth and cuteness.

Fans quickly came to Karina’s defense. Most of them talked about the importance of using more makeup than usual on performers.
It’s thick because it’s stage makeup. She has to use a lot because the lighting is so intense. The stage lighting washes out everyone so idol makeup is always thick. It’s stage makeup…
They added that her features would not pop out as much if she had used natural makeup instead. The lighting on stage, after all, has the tendency to make performers look pale unless they pack on blush, eyeshadow, and the like.
