Tove Lo’s ‘Habits (Stay High)’ Joins The Spotify Billions Club

Tove Lo’s 2013 hit “Habits (Stay High)” has joined the elite group of songs that have hit one billion streams on Spotify. It’s the first of the Swedish singer-songwriter’s songs to reach this milestone.

“Habits (Stay High)” originally featured on Tove Lo’s debut extended play (EP) ‘Truth Serum’ and her debut studio album, Queen of the Clouds (2014). It was written by Lo with Ludvig Söderberg and Jakob Jerlström, who also produced the record, though billed as the Struts.

In general, “Habits (Stay High)” was well received by most critics, who commended its lyrics and production. It went on to become a sleeper hit and entered the music charts in 2014, one year after its original release. It eventually peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and became the highest-charting song by a Swedish artist on that chart since “The Sign” by Ace of Base peaked at number one in 1994. Since then, “Habits (Stay High)” has been certified 8× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over 2.6 million copies in the country.

Just days before “Habits (Stay High)” hit one billion streams, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With A Smile” became the fastest song to reach a billion streams on Spotify. The collaborative ballad was released as a standalone single in August and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Gaga and Mars debuted the track live at the latter’s show celebrating the opening of Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome. They later performed the song during Mars’ concert residency at Las Vegas’ Park MGM.

The pair released a “Live in Las Vegas” version of the song as well as an acoustic rendition. “Die With A Smile” was recently nominated for Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
