Sometimes big operating system updates have unintended consequences, and Microsoft‘s Windows 11 version 24H2 has basically killed several Ubisoft games.

As reported by VGC, Microsoft has acknowledged that the update affects five Ubisoft games: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars Outlaws.

These are all major Ubisoft open-world games, so there’s a chance you already have one. Microsoft’s support page notes “These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen.”

Fortunately, Microsoft has applied a “compatibility hold” on computers with these games installed. This means that the update, which was previewed in the summer and has been rolling out this month, won’t be automatically installed if you have one of these games on your PC.

The company adds that “We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until this issue has been resolved”.

Ubisoft has also acknowledged the issue and released a temporary fix for its latest game, Star Wars Outlaws, but it’s far from perfect. “Please note that you may experience some performance issues while we work on a more permanent fix. As soon as it is ready, we will let you know,” the company states.

It isn’t clear at this time what is causing the issue, but it appears to only be affecting these open-world Ubisoft games at the moment.

If this issue is affecting your games, you could try to unistall the latest update. Simply go to the settings app on you PC, select ‘windows update’, then ‘update history’, and then hit ‘uninstall upodates’.
