070 Shake has announced her return with a new album, Petrichor, out November 15th via Def Jam. The announcement comes with the new single “Winter Baby / New Jersey Blues” and an accompanying Bennett Watanabe-directed music video starring Shake and real-life partner Lily-Rose Depp.
The first half of the single is classic doo-wop, before transitioning into a more modern, atmospheric rock track. “New Jersey Blues / My baby gets me through / Cherry syrup medicine cures nightmares too / Toxic fumes, processed foods,” repeats the chorus. The Wong Kar Wai-inspired video features Lily-Rose dancing to a jukebox in a near empty bar, later performing onstage as Shake watches on.
Produced by Shake’s longtime collaborator Dave Hamelin (Beyoncé, King Princess), Tyler Johnson (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), and Patrick Krief (The Dears), the album promises more of Shake’s genre-bending style and a “glimpse into her fatal vision of desire.”
The record’s title Petrichor is a term used to describe the smell of rain on arid soil after a long period of dry weather. “Petrichor is a feeling,” Shake shared in in an interview with Cultured Magazine this summer. “It’s the perfect word to describe this body of music.” The music in question features acoustic guitars, ornate piano passages, ominous synths, dembow and hip-hop rhythms, with a dash of psychedelia.
The album is set to feature collaborations with Hole’s Courtney Love (“Song To The Siren”), JT (on “Into Your Garden”) and Cam (“Never Let Us Fade.”)
Shake released her critically acclaimed debut album Modus Vivendi in 2020, followed by You Can’t Kill Me in 2022. In 2023, she appeared on RAYE’s hit single “Escapism,” which hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, and went double platinum in the US and multiple other countries.
