The Apple TV+ series is set to return on January 17 for a 10-episode run that will conclude on March 21, a full three years after the high-concept show left viewers hanging at the conclusion of its critically acclaimed first season.

The show, which was created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, stars Scott as Mark, an employee of Lumon Industries who consents to a “severance” program that separates his work and non-work memories. Christopher Walken, John Turturro and Patricia Arquette also star.

Now, the trailer for season two shows Mark regaining consciousness in the elevator in which he was left at the end of season one, only to find himself plunged into an alienating, head-spinning world of endless corridors and creepy workmates. Watch it here:

The trailer has hit many fans of the show hard, with comedian and actor Patton Oswalt taking to X to exclaim: “The fucking TRAILER for this show is one of the best short horror movies I’ve ever seen. Just the TRAILER. Good lord.”

Apple’s synopsis for season two reads: “In Severance Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives.

“This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.”

second season was initially confirmed by Apple TV+ back in April 2022, days before the finale of the first season. The first teaser trailer was then shared back in July this year.

In a statement at the time of the second season announcement, Stiller said: “It’s really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show – and the level of fan engagement. It has been a long road bringing Severance to television. I first read Dan’s pilot over five years ago.

“It has always been a multi-season story, and I’m really happy we get to continue it. I’m grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Kier!”

In a five star review of season one, NME said: “So, great cast, great writing, great premise, great everything. The whole package. The home run. If ever you were in doubt about returning to the office, Severance gives it to you straight: don’t bother.”
