Grimes reacts to Poppy “dredging up ancient drama”: “I hope one day she grows up”

Grimes has responded to Poppy‘s recent re-ignition of they years-long feud – see what the ‘Kill V. Maim’ singer had to say below.

Grimes’ and Poppy’s beef dates back to 2018, when the two collaborated on the song ‘Play Destroy’ for the latter’s album ‘Am I A Girl?’. At the time, Poppy claimed that she “could have gone without” the trouble that was allegedly caused by her collaborator.

Poppy alleged that she had been “bullied into submission” by Grimes and her team, who forced “songwriters into signing NDA[s] and not taking credit for songs that they were a part of”. In response at the time, Grimes claimed that she was forced into a “disgusting situation” by the singer and YouTuber.

The two have gone back-and-forth several times in the years that followed, with Grimes stoking the flames again last year saying Poppy had no evidence to back up her claims – Poppy responded with a simple “Are we still doing this? Lol. 5 years triggered.”

Now, however, Poppy has taken a jab at Grimes once again, this time in the form of a fortune reading as part of her new Veep series Improbably Poppy. In the premiere episode, Poppy pretends to be a fortune teller for random members of the public.

In the clip below, Poppy tells an unsuspecting man: “Grimes is going to ask you to be a surrogate to her child. Say yes. But don’t go to the appointment. If you let her sing anything from her major-label releases to you, it’s too late.”

Following the video’s publication, Grimes took to X (owned by her child’s father Elon Musk) to react to the clip. In a lengthy response, Grimes wrote, alluding to ‘Play Destroy’ being released by Poppy despite Grime’s refusal: “Poppy is talented and doesn’t need to lower herself to dredging up ancient drama to get people to listen to her music. I don’t understand these continued attempts to goad me into a public fight, all because I did not want to put out a song with her abusive boyfriend Titanic Sinclair (which they leaked anyway).

“I don’t claim any kind of moral authority. I understand how hard it is when the world is asking you to speak negatively about someone close to you who has done bad things. I wish her the best and I hope one day she grows up and realizes that I’ve tried to be a girls girl here. I will not fight back, I won’t pursue legal action, I will not get into the details. This is an entirely one sided situation.

Grimes continued: “I don’t see the point in attacking ur friend while they take personal and professional hits for you. Again, I don’t claim any moral authority. I respect the friendship we once had and I have empathy for the rough spot she was in when she started doing this. I hope one day she is able to see who actually cares about her and who is standing up for her.”

In a follow-up post, the musician responded to claims that Poppy was involved in Grime’s ‘We Appreciate Power’, but was “forced” to sign an NDA that meant Poppy wouldn’t be credited for the song.

Grimes wrote: “Poppy had nothing to do with wap. It bothers me that they continue this nda nonsense, as far as I’m aware no ndas have been proposed nor signed between her and I. I think it’s reasonable defend myself when I was accused of forcing her to sign an nda, which I did not do. The only nda that was signed was between myself and titanic in an attempt by me to try and not have titanic on the song they leaked, which he obviously broke anyway. And I did not pursue legal action against him regardless, because I don’t see the point. nor did I defend myself about what that was about when they leaked that. they continue to take these peace offerings as a sign that they can get press off this absurd mess. It should end now. Fr.”

Prior to the Improbably Poppy clip making rounds on the internet, Poppy last month announced her new album ‘Negative Spaces’, and shared the heavy new single ‘They’re All Around Us’.

‘Negative Spaces’ is due for release on November 15 via Sumerian Records and is now available for pre-order and pre-saving on digital streaming platforms. The album is also previewed by another previously released single, ‘New Way Out’.

Speaking to NME upon the release of ‘New Way Out’ earlier this year, Poppy reflected on ‘Zig’ and looked forward to future releases: “The mission for that album was to make a dance-inspired piece, but for this project, the goal is to bring a new level of intensity to my music. It feels like a good time for it as well, because there’s a lot of tension out there.”

She also teased what her new material might sound like: “I knew before I even started ‘Zig’ that I wanted to explore this kind of music and address those emotions afterwards. I’m always after an emotional swing really. If I go one way, I need to run in the opposite direction afterwards, because it’s all about balance. I view projects as rollercoaster rides; they should vary. But this is where we begin.”

Prior to the announcement of ‘Negative Spaces’ and the release of ‘New Way Out’, Poppy collaborated with Knocked Loose for ‘Suffocate’. This came after Jordan Fish spoke to NME about his life after Bring Me The Horizon, producing House Of Protection, and various other projects he’s been involved with.
