Passengers on a Qantas flight have received an apology after an R-rated Dakota Johnson film was shown to the entire plane.
The 2023 film Daddio, which also stars Sean Penn, follows a young woman who strikes up a conversation with a taxi driver upon her return to Manhattan.
According to reports, a technical issue on a flight between Sydney and Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan meant that individual selection of movies was not available. After some passengers selected Daddio, it then was chosen by the crew to play for everyone.
However, crew members replaced it with a children’s film after some passengers realised the movie’s sexually explicit content.
In a statement, Qantas said (via The Guardian): “The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologise to customers for this experience.
“All screens were changed to a family-friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible. We are reviewing how the movie was selected.”
Some on board have posted about the experience on Reddit, one claiming: “They realised it after 40min of penis and boobs and decided to play Inside Out 2 followed by some New Zealand survivor nature show.”
They added: “I really thought they were playing Madame Web or something — I honestly don’t know if that would’ve been worse. These poor kids and the parents because y’all should’ve heard the audible gasps across the plane.”

Another said: “It was super uncomfortable for everyone, especially with families and kids onboard […] How is this acceptable for a major airline? Has anyone else had something like this happen?”
Johnson recently appeared in Madame Web, which became a box office and critical flop upon its release earlier this year.
The actress later admitted she was “not surprised” by the reception, and said she would “never” do a film like it again.
