Is Throne and Liberty pay-to-win? The MMO genre is a minefield for pay-to-win experiences that force you to grind for hours and hours or spend a tonne of money to get stronger.

Thankfully, Throne and Liberty is trying to strike a balance between being grindy, as an MMO usually is, while respecting your time. The game has avoided many of the pay-to-win pitfalls that the genre often steps in.
Throne and Liberty is not pay-to-win. Instead, it operates on more of a pay-to-skip model. All combat upgrades and power boosts are available to all players, although you can progress towards them quicker by spending money via the auction house. These details were confirmed in a blog on the Throne and Liberty website in July 2024.
The core pillars of this monetisation are:
Player self-expression is paramount
Combat and power upgrades must be accessible to all players
Purchasing items from our in-game shop must feel rewarding, but never necessary
This means the game strikes a decent balance of requiring grinding, levelling up, and time investment but doesn’t feel overly punishing if you don’t spend money. At the end of the day, it is still an MMO, so some grinding is required.
In the game, you can purchase a levelling pass once per character to obtain a consistent stream of materials. There is also a battle pass, which is purchaseable every month on a per-character basis, allowing you to earn additional materials and new cosmetic items and armour.

The game also has a set of items available in an in-game store (purchaseable with real money). These are all cosmetic and items purchased from the store can’t be used within the game’s auction house.
Trades within this auction house will use the game’s premium currency, Lucent. However, this currency can be earned in the battle pass and by selling items via the auction house. The auction house is the main way that you can progress your power by using real money. However, all the items and upgrades from it can also be found in-game.
